چکیده
Modeling and predicting ocean flow are great challenges in physical oceanography. To answer such challenges, mobile sensing platforms have been an effective tool for providing Lagrangian flow information. Such information is typically incorporated into ocean models using Lagrangian data assimilation which requires significant amount of computing power and time. Motion tomography (MT) constructs generic environmental models (GEMs) that combine computational ocean models with real-time data collected from mobile platforms to provide highresolution predictions near the mobile platforms. MT employs Lagrangian data from mobile platforms to create a spatial map of flow in the region traversed by the mobile platforms. This paper extends the MT method to resolve the coupling between temporal variations and spatial variations in flow modeling. Along with Lagrangian data from a mobile sensor, Eulerian data are collected from a stationary sensor deployed in the region where the mobile sensor collects data. Assimilation of these two data sets into GEMs introduces a nonlinear filtering problem. This paper presents the formulation of such nonlinear filtering problem and derives a filtering method for estimating flow model parameters. We analyze observability for the derived filters and demonstrate that the resulting method improves navigation accuracy for mobile platforms.

متن کاملForward Electromagnetic Scattering Models For Sea Ice - Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Transactions on
Recent advances in forward modeling of the electromagnetic scattering properties of sea ice are presented. In particular, the principal results include the following: 1) approximate calculations of electromagnetic scattering from multilayer random media with rough interfaces, based on the distorted Born approximation and radiative transfer (RT) theory; 2) comprehensive theory of the effective c...
متن کاملA constant-factor approximation algorithm for the k-median problem
We present the first constant-factor approximation algorithm for the metric k-median problem. The k-median problem is one of the most well-studied clustering problems, i.e., those problems in which the aim is to partition a given set of points into clusters so that the points within a cluster are relatively close with respect to some measure. For the metric k-median problem, we are given n poin...
متن کاملInverse electromagnetic scattering models for sea ice
Inverse scattering algorithms for reconstructing the physical properties of sea ice from scattered electromagnetic field data are presented. The development of these algorithms has advanced the theory of remote sensing, particularly in the microwave region, and has the potential to form the basis for a new generation of techniques for recovering sea ice properties, such as ice thickness, a para...
متن کاملLower Bounds on Implementing Robust and Resilient Mediators
We provide new and tight lower bounds on the ability of players to implement equilibria using cheap talk, that is, just allowing communication among the players. One of our main results is that, in general, it is impossible to implement three-player Nash equilibria in a bounded number of rounds. We also give the first rigorous connection between Byzantine agreement lower bounds and lower bounds...
